Speaking at the Broadband India Forum (BIF) event, DDG (Data Services) in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Vivek Narain mentioned the potential and impact of the PM-Vani Wi-Fi Hotspot scheme in sectors like tourism, smart cities. and last mile connectivity in villages.
To boost broadband internet spread across the country, the government, in December 2020, approved setting up of public Wi-Fi networks and access points by local kirana and neighborhood shops through public data offices, with no license, fee will not be included. or registration.
The Public Wi-Fi Access Network Interface, popularly known as PM-Vani, promises to bring a massive Wi-Fi revolution in the country.
“BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) will shift its 30,000 hotspots to PM-Vani by June. Railways has already covered around 100 railway stations on PM-Vani and is going to cover all its hotspots… Railways… all of them will be covered under PM Vani by June,” Narayan said at the BIF event on Tuesday.
Apart from this, the Railways has also said that all its future hotspots will be under the PM-Vani framework, terming it a major achievement.
The event also saw the official launch of the BIF Connectivity Accelerator Program with the top 10 shortlisted ventures. BIF has partnered with Headstart Network Foundation and META for this initiative.
The top 10 enterprises will undergo an intensive and fast-paced program to grow their business.
The accelerator program provides various elements of engagement to support enterprises in their journey.
It offers masterclasses by experts in business, technology, investment and marketing, as well as mentorship by industry experts to not only guide them through the program but also connect them to opportunities. It also provides networking opportunities with corporates, BIF said in a statement.
The event announced the top 10 ventures that were selected for the accelerator program after three intensive rounds. These ventures – which participated and presented their solutions/products at the session – included Viom, SheaFi Networks, Digigaon Job Factory, Matrecom Technologies, and Agile Business Associates, among others.
