Chromebook shipments continue to decline: Report

Whole world Chromebook A recent report by IDC shows that shipments declined 61.9 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022, closing at 5.1 million units. This is another big drop after Chromebook shipments declined 63.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Total shipments declined to 5.1 million units in the previous quarter from 13.3 million units in the first quarter of 2021. The reason for the decline in Chromebook shipments is market saturation in mature markets such as the United States, the report said. However, developing markets, including Asia, posted growth in the last quarter as investment in the education sector continued to increase.
“The decline in Chromebooks is no surprise given the build-up of inventory due to lower demand over the past several quarters,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC.
Urbani further said that the makers will clear the existing stock in the coming months with the help of promotional offers. Also, shipments are expected to increase as new education starts after a few months.
The top five manufacturers in Q1 2022 were Lenovo, Ditch, acer, Himachal Pradesh, and Samsung. According to the report, HP, the biggest seller in the first quarter of last year, took the biggest hit in the previous quarter, which saw a year-on-year decline of 82.1 percent.
In Q1 2022, Lenovo recorded a shipment of 1.2 million units with a market share of 23.2 percent. Lenovo’s shipments saw a decline of 65.6 per cent. Dell shipped 1.2 million units in Q1 2022, accounting for 22.9 percent of the market share. Meanwhile, Acer had a market share of 22 per cent and total shipments stood at 1.2 million units.
HP is the biggest seller with total shipments of 4.4 million units in Q1 2022, a decline of 82.2 percent, shipping 0.8 million Chromebooks in the previous quarter.
Samsung ranked fifth with total shipments of 0.3 million units, down from 1 million units in the first quarter of 2021. The Korean electronics giant had a market share of 6.5 percent. Meanwhile, other manufacturers accounted for 0.5 million units and a market share of 10.1 percent of the total worldwide shipments.
