The Tone Transfer Tool project relies on a machine learning process called Differential Digital Signal Processing Or DDSP. While testing the instrument, the team introduces the model with a 10-minute recording to process and play the violin through their system. Afterwards, the team began monitoring the program’s progress and ability to recreate the sound. The developers found that after an hour of training, the model was able to recreate a sound similar to the synth being played. In addition, after 10 hours of training, the instrument was able to replicate the sound of the violin almost indistinguishable. This model can control many different audio signatures provided by the instrument to help successfully recreate the sound. This project shows how machine learning has progressed as AI gains the ability to develop and reproduce musical instruments on its own.
How to make sound in Tone Transfer?
Google’s Magenta team has made Tone Transfer available for the public to try themselves. Users can either choose a sample offered by the program or upload their own tracks. After this, users will have to choose the instrument sound in which the track will be morphed. The result options available are flute, saxophone, trumpet and violin.
First, users have to choose a source sound and click on the play icon under the sound signature to see how it sounds. Next, they have to choose an output sound and click Play again to listen to the sound again and switch to a new instrument.
Users need to select the “Add your own” option under the Source sample section if they want to upload their own sound sample. Users can either record sound or upload a file from their PC if their device is compatible. Click on the Done button after recording or uploading is finished, this will allow you to listen to the recorded or uploaded track. Once you are happy with it the Tone Transform Tool will start processing the sample and click on the Transform button.
However, make sure you’re choosing a track that only has one tone playing at a time. This will help the model differentiate between different tones and produce better results. The tool also provides a slider icon that can be used to tune the final result. Users can also adjust Mix, Octave and Loudness at their discretion.
