Microsoft: Microsoft files patent for LG-like reverse foldable display, may use it in Surface Duo 3

Microsoft According to a report by Windows Central, a new patent application has been filed that demonstrates a unique foldable display on a mobile device. The unique display on the device can fold without creating an angled gap and can even reverse-fold it 360-degrees for a single-display mode. The company has outlined the details of this new foldable display technology in a patent application that also shows “examples and methods of folding a display device through a range of degrees in the folding portion”. The report states that the images show the intentions of the device which when completely turned off can bend in every direction without any lag. The patent application is mostly about the ways in which the display folds, the hinge, the gear and the overall design. The report also suggests that a glass display may do what Microsoft wants which is expected to be interesting.
How this new display technology will help Microsoft Surface Duo,
currently, Microsoft Surface Duo is relying on two displays instead of one and this new foldable display technology could solve several alleged issues related to the device. It’s important to note that the Surface Duo can reverse the Fold in several different postures, including single-screen mode. However, the difference created by the two displays can be annoying for users who prefer a large, single-screen experience, especially when streaming content. of google Android The 12L is also expected to act as a software fix that will mimic the dual-screen experience. With these software improvements, OEMs won’t need to “hack it” like their own. samsung,
How is this new foldable display technology similar to LG’s?
The report also mentioned that LG showcased some of its new display technology at the SID 2022 Display Week held earlier this week. The South Korean tech giant unveiled a new 8.03-inch foldable OLED display that can fold in and out at any angle from 0 to 360 degrees, among other innovations, at the event. The report claims that this is the same technology that Microsoft will need for its patent application.
LG’s new foldable display tech specifications
As per the report, LG’s new foldable display technology uses UTG (ultra-thin glass) and even has an anti-fingerprint material to keep the device smudge-free. The display supports 2480 x 2200 resolution with 413 ppi pixel-density that provides peak brightness of 600 nits and 109.9% DCI-P3 color gamut. The company also claims that the display can withstand up to 200,000 folds.
In contrast, Microsoft Surface Duo 2 Sporting an 8.3-inch OLED display that supports 1892 x 2688 resolution with 401 ppi pixel density which is not much different from the one displayed by LG.
The future of Microsoft’s foldable display technology
Microsoft may experiment more with these innovations that can be mass-produced at affordable prices in the future. However, it is too early to speculate whether a Surface Duo 3 A launch with such a design will take place by the fall of 2023.
As per the report, Microsoft may reconsider the dual-screen approach for the Surface Duo and also try to do a variant with a foldable display. However, current technology allows such devices to be folded in a single direction which would eliminate any advantages the Surface Duo may have over other foldable devices.
The report also mentioned that Microsoft has no plans to release the Surface Duo 3 in 2022. Instead, the tech giant will focus more on software, including integrating Android 12L with the native Surface Duo and the current Surface Duo 2 in the coming months.
In other news, Xiaomi has tweeted about its partnership with Leica and also confirmed the arrival of a flagship smartphone with the new camera technology later this year. Click Here to find out more.
