Order on Swapna’s plea on Monday

The Ernakulam Principal District and Sessions Court will pass its order on Monday on a plea by Swapna Suresh, an accused in the diplomatic channel gold smuggling case, relaxing her bail conditions in the Prevention of Money Laundering Case filed by the Enforcement Directorate. Ed).

Swapna had approached the court seeking relaxation of her bail condition that she would not leave Ernakulam. The petitioner submitted that she was a permanent resident of Thiruvananthapuram and wanted to go back, her lawyer Suraj T. Elanjikal said.

The ED, which had earlier submitted before the court that it had no objection in relaxing the bail conditions, had suggested that she would not leave the state without the prior permission of the court.

She came out of jail two weeks ago after spending nearly a year and a half in jail.

It was the bail granted by the Kerala High Court in a case registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act that eventually enabled Swapna to get out of jail.

He had earlier secured bail in two cases registered by Customs, one in relation to gold smuggling and the other in connection with US dollar smuggling. The Kerala High Court had also quashed the preventive custody imposed against him under the Foreign Exchange Protection and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act.
