New Delhi has made it abundantly clear that it cannot be ‘business as usual’ with China until the border stand-off is resolved on mutually acceptable terms. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar admitted that the pace of relations between India and China is slower than expected. After meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, EAM said that the current situation is a ‘Work in Progress’, obviously, at a slower pace than desirable. Jaishankar admitted that India’s relationship with China at present is not normal, given the presence of a large number of troops ‘in contravention of the 1993-96 agreements.’ This is the first visit by a high-profile Chinese official since the Galwan clash of June 2020, which saw both sides suffer casualties when soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Indian and Chinese forces remain locked in a stand-off at several places along the LAC in the Ladakh region.
