Switch to OLED for other reasons
According to the report, Samsung may plan to stop production of LCD panels in June as it is not in line with Samsung Display’s long-term outlook for the business. The company plans to replace the LCD panel with quantum dot (QD-OLED) displays as Samsung recently repurposed an obsolete LCD plant to manufacture OLED panels.
The company is unwilling to compete in a market where affordable panels dominated by Chinese and Taiwanese counterparts. The report claimed that falling LCD prices are also preventing Samsung from continuing production.
The biggest buyer of Samsung Display was the consumer electronics arm of the group, Samsung Electronics, However, the company itself is choosing affordable LCD panels from Chinese and Taiwanese suppliers.
