Telegram joins Brazilian electoral court program to fight fake news

The court said on its website that messaging app Telegram signed an agreement on Friday to join a program created by Brazil’s electoral court to combat misinformation ahead of the country’s presidential election in October.

Wire The only remaining major messaging and social network was the app that had yet to close its partnership with the court.

“The objective of the partnership is to fight fake content relating to electoral justice, electronic voting systems, various stages of the electoral process and the actors involved,” the court note said.

On Thursday, Telegram’s local representative Alan Campos Elias Thomaz said he would make the proposal to company executives, adding that the app is committed to fighting “fake news.”

Brazil’s Supreme Court last week suspended the app for non-compliance, but the measure was rescinded on Sunday.
